Course description

This innovative eight week Mindfulness course offers new ways to support your resilience and thrive in busy and challenging work settings. Over the last twenty years, the way we work has changed enormously while workloads have simultaneously increased. Our bodies and brains aren’t designed to sit at desks, read screens, and keep up 24/7 with messages. Mindfulness moves us out of the Twitter-sphere by focussing on our bodies and breath, which act as a barometer to signal the initial signs of stress and distress. If we catch stress signatures early enough, we can make choices to act in ways beneficial to ourselves, our clients, and the service we work for.

The course involves learning a range of meditation practices, participating in reflective exercises and a small amount of teaching from neuroscience and cognitive psychology. It is first and foremost an experiential course and not an academic course. We learn through practising mindfulness together, finding ways to acknowledge how things actually are as opposed to how we would prefer things to be - this can be challenging, but also opens up a choice on how best respond to stress and difficulty.

The approach works through its practice and benefits are usually felt by those who are able to commit to all sessions of the course including daily meditation and other activities during the course.

Training objectives

The Mindfulness course includes 8 classes at weekly intervals. The course is an intensive training programme and not a series of drop-ins - it is therefore important to ensure you can attend the whole programme before applying.

The course also involves undertaking 30 to 45 minutes of ‘home practice’ a day including meditation and other exercises. This is a very important part of the program so it is important to reflect on whether you have the time available to do this before applying for the course.

Your place on the course will not be finalised until you have completed a more detailed application which will be held confidentially. If you are not suitable for the course once screening has taken place the cost of the screening, £12.50 per delegate will not be refundable.

Learning outcomes

Many people find that worrying about the future or ruminating over past events can leave us feeling more anxious, stressed or low and this may continue despite our best intentions. Mindfulness can help us learn ways to reduce the impact of worry and rumination and increase wellbeing by helping us:

  • notice when we are caught up in unhelpful thought patterns

  • bring our attention back to the present moment in a flexible way and

  • to relate to ourselves and our experiences with more perspective and kindness

The idea of ‘putting on our oxygen mask’ before helping others is central to this course.

Additional Information

You will also be invited to complete activities at home on a daily basis as part of the course, including listening to meditation CDs/MP3 for around 30 minutes and other reflective activities.

Evidence suggests that the benefits of mindfulness are linked to this home practice so it is important to assess if you have space to fully take part in the course before you apply.

You will be provided with a link to audio tracks and a Mindfulness Manual during the course.
