This course raises awareness of the political environment and decision making processes in East Sussex County Council. It explores the broader political environment in which we work and live. Interactive exercises focus on the varied roles of elected Councillors (Members) and explore the relationship between Members and officers.

This course is ideal for anyone who wants to gain a better awareness of how the County Council works as a political organisation.

It is recommended as an extension to the induction for all staff and is considered essential for those who are new to a local authority.

By the end of the course you will understand:

• the electoral areas within EastSussex


• the different roles of elected Members


• how top level decisions are made in East Sussex County Council


• the role of overview and scrutiny


• the nature of the relationship between Members and officers
