Code: ESC/19/141 Equality & Diversity for Managers

It is the responsibility of all to act and lead by example in ways that support equality and diversity.  Successful organisations are the ones that reflect the richness of diversity in their workforce that exists in their local community. It takes account of people of different ages, appearances, genders, origins, cultures, race, geographical locations, health and mental health, relationships, sexual orientations, class, religion and beliefs, political beliefs, social and economic status and those with or without responsibilities for dependents. However, to be successful an organisation must first look to and understand its organisational culture.

Organisational culture refers to the collective beliefs and principles of an organisation. Every organisation has a unique culture and gives it a sense of direction which decides and controls the way its workforce behave among themselves and to those outside their organisation. Without understanding what its collective beliefs and principles are, an organisation could experience poor staff engagement, retention and services.

You will need to bring your own lap top on the day.

Code: ESC/19/61 Mindfulness 8 week course (EVENT FULL)

This innovative eight week Mindfulness course offers new ways to support your resilience and thrive in busy and challenging work settings. Over the last twenty years, the way we work has changed enormously while workloads have simultaneously increased. Our bodies and brains aren’t designed to sit at desks, read screens, and keep up 24/7 with messages. Mindfulness moves us out of the Twitter-sphere by focussing on our bodies and breath, which act as a barometer to signal the initial signs of stress and distress. If we catch stress signatures early enough, we can make choices to act in ways beneficial to ourselves, our clients, and the service we work for.

The course involves learning a range of meditation practices, participating in reflective exercises and a small amount of teaching from neuroscience and cognitive psychology. It is first and foremost an experiential course and not an academic course. We learn through practising mindfulness together, finding ways to acknowledge how things actually are as opposed to how we would prefer things to be - this can be challenging, but also opens up a choice on how best respond to stress and difficulty.

The approach works through its practice and benefits are usually felt by those who are able to commit to all sessions of the course including daily meditation and other activities during the course.
